Background

Hard work and great passion, this is the recipe that we use to produce our wines, the other ingredients are gifted to us, the land and air found in this small corner of Tuscany: the hills of San Macario in Lucca. Il Calamaio was founded in 2003 with an acquisition of a neglected property in San Macario, about 5 km from the city center of Lucca in Tuscany. From the beginning of our adventure, we concentrated our forces in producing a wine, that although an expression of the territory, was not be taken for granted nor predictable. We have planted new cuttings of different Sangiovese clones, while at the same time working hard to recuperate the old vineyard (30-40 years), abandoned for years, but which we didn’t want to absolutely lose, conscious of the important eno-cultural baggage we would have lost with these. We also found space for a small vineyard of Merlot and to plant some vines of Chardonnay and Petite Arvine from which our white wine is born. In 2009, we built a new, more functional and modern canteen, and a little at a time have equipped ourselves with the minimal machinery necessary to carry out our work in the best way possible. Our winery is very small, only two and a half vital hectare which, considering its incline, is cultivated in ledges which reduces roughly 12.000 meters of real vital surface, therefore the number of bottles is scarce, 8-10 thousand.
